THE BREWER BROTHERS | 1993
Prosecution (on behalf of the Crown)
Defence (on behalf of the accused)
Most cases of missing children are resolved within 48 hours and 99% of cases are closed within the first year.
Sadly this was not the case for 14 year old Daniel and 13 year old Steven Brewer. On Boxing Day in 1993 the two brothers went out to play with their new roller skates and never returned home. They had seemingly disappeared without a trace, leaving behind only their two pairs of skates which were found at the edge of Badger Hill, York two days later. The police weren’t able to tie anyone to the crime and the children’s disappearance went unsolved.
On 3rd July 1997 the bodies of the two boys were discovered beneath the foundations of the University of York Psychology department where work had been ongoing for many years. It was then that the investigation officially escalated from missing persons, to murder. Once again, despite significant resources deployed into the case there was insufficient evidence to charge anyone with the crime. Until now.
Forensic evidence retrieved from the boys’ bodies bore no match for anyone in the police database in 1997. But when Paul Sutton was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in July 2019 he provided a DNA sample, a DNA sample which was a positive match to that found on the boys.
DCI Karen Hardy, leading the investigation believes they now have their man.
Did you know... the Brewer's Brothers were the first missing persons to be printed on pub beer mats and distributed through England & Wales.
Section 10 Criminal Justice Act Admissions:
These facts are previously agreed by both sides as accurate. As such they will not be contested in the trial but can be relied upon by the jury when reaching their verdict.
Daniel & Steven Brewer were last seen by a cashier at a Petrol station in Dunnington on the outskirts of York at 8.30pm. They headed off along the A1079 towards York City Centre
Two pairs of roller skates were recovered on a dirt track just outside of Badger Hill park, these skates belonged to Daniel & Steven Brewer
Following a post mortem of the remains in 1997, DNA was collected from the arms and neck region of the two bodies and uploaded to the National Database. Subsequent DNA is a positive match to Mr Paul Sutton
Mr Paul Sutton was raised in Alcuin Avenue on the Tang Hill Estate in York in Foster care following expulsion from his adopted family
At the age of 18 he requested a copy of his original birth certificate (as is his right)
Stopped in Glasgow on 3rd July 2019 for speeding by an area patrol car, Paul Sutton was breathalysed and was over the legal limit. He plead guilty to this charge.
Additional Section 10 evidence may be put forward to the jury as part of the trial.
